A Tip for Your Voice Mail Greeting

I have to chuckle every time I hear a voice mail or home answering machine greeting that says, “I’m unable to come to the phone right now…”, or “I can’t answer the phone right now.” Well duh, no kidding?

Reminds me of the  TV commercial with the poor little old lady sprawled out on the floor, saying, “I’ve fallen and can’t get up.”

Avoid “I’m unable to come to the phone.” It says nothing. Instead, give some info. Provide something more positive such as,

”I’m in meetings until 12 noon on Thursday and will return calls then. In the meantime you can hit extension 25 and speak with…”

Tell them where you are, when they can expect to hear from you, and what they can do if they need something right now.

My voice mail says, “My name is Ted Luce with Rangel Distributing Company and I’m looking forward to serving you today. Please leave a message and I’ll return your call as soon as possible”.
It conveys an attitude in keeping with good customer service and lets them know I will get back with them THAT DAY.
